New Haven, CT - Just before shift change this morning, firefighters in the Hill section received an early wake up call. They responded to 244 Howard Ave for a dwelling fire. First due Engine 11 found heavy smoke from the second floor of a dwelling. Companies began an interior attack and searches simultaneously. They discovered that the dwelling was vacant and that the fire was in the basement. The fire ran the number two side walls up to the third floor before being brought under control. It was later discovered that the fire started on the first floor, burnt through the floor into the basement, then traveled up the walls. There were no injuries to firefighters. The cause of the fire is suspicious.
