Brookhaven Working Fire Aubourn Ave 8/13/22
Shirley N.Y.- On Saturday August 13 at about 10:16 AM the Brookhaven Fire Department was activated for a reported residential structure fire on Auborn ave between Dawn Dr and Beatrice Dr. Brookhaven Assistant Chief Giuseppe Loiacono[5-3-32] advised Fire-Com that he was responding. The Fire-Com dispatcher at that time advised that they had received 2 calls stating the porch of the house was on fire and it was believed a dog was trapped inside.
Chief Loiacono arrived on scene within minutes of the initial call and found the front of the house engulfed in flames and the roof over the front porch to be already collapsed. The working fire [signal 13-35] was quickly transmitted. At that time knowing that it was possible that the dog was still in the home and not knowing if any people were still inside Chief Loiacono put on his turnout gear and looked for a way to get into the home. He was able to find a way in from the rear of the house as the first engine crews from Engines 5-3-8 & 5-3-9 began arriving on the scene. While crews were in the process of stretching lines and securing a positive water supply the chief began conducting a search and was able to locate the dog and bring it out of the home to other waiting first responders.A bird appeared to also be removed from the house as well.
The crews from Brookhaven began to be joined by crews from mutual aid departments including Mastic, Yaphank, and Center Moriches. Crews operated under command of Chief of Department Dan DiPinto and Assistant Chief Anthony Verni was the Operations Chief for the alarm. They were able to quickly knock down the fire and the under control was transmitted around 11 AM. Companies remained on scene for a while longer hitting any hotspots and overhauling. PSEG also came into the scene to cut the power and secure the power line running from pole to house. Shirley Ambulance stood by at the scene and also conducted firefighter rehab functions.
No injuries were reported and the scene was later turned over to the Brookhaven town fire marshal’s office. The Suffolk Police Department’s Arson Squad was also on scene. All units were released from the scene shortly afternoon.
