Middle Island- Working Fire - Fairview Artist Lake Condos 4/24/2022
Middle Island N.Y. – On Sunday April 24th at about 2:07 PM the Middle Island Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at 137 Fairview Circle located in the Fairview at Artist Lake Condominium Complex. Shortly after the initial activation Fire-Com advised the responding Chiefs that they were receiving multiple calls for the incident. On arrival the 1st Assistant Chief Marcel Rosenfield {5-15-31} encountered fire coming from the 1st and 2nd floor units. The job was quickly reactivated for a working fire and mutual was dispatched into the scene to assist.
Chief of Department William Nevin { 5-15-30} arrived on scene shortly after and began handing operations while Assistant Chief Rosenfield continued to be in command of the incident. Mutual aid units from Yaphank, Ridge, Coram, Gordon Heights, Brookhaven National Lab (BNL) , Medford and Rocky Point began to come into the scene to assist. Firefighters began to stretch handlines . At 1 point at least 4 handlines were stretched and placed into operation. In addition to the handlines Middle Island’s Tower Ladder #1 was also placed into operations to put water on the fire as well.
There were concerns about gas that supplies the building as well as structural integrity. During the operation part of the 2nd floor did collapse prompting an evacuation of the building and switches to exterior operations. No firefighters were injured in the collapse. Firefighters battled hotspots for an extended period and there was extensive overhaul as there a total of 12 units in the building that was involved. Of those 12 according to officials at least 4 were destroyed and up to 5 or 6 additional units sustained damage that would cause the residents to not be able to return to them. Fire Officials requested the Red Cross to assist with disaster relief for the displaced residents. No Firefighters or civilians were injured from the fire. The Brookhaven Town Fire Marshals Office was notified and called to the scene to investigate.
