Mastic Beach - Animal Rescue- Narrows Bay Smith Point {1/23/22}
Mastic Beach N.Y.- At about 4:27 PM January 23rd, 2022, the Mastic Beach Fire Department was called for an Animal Rescue to Smith Pt Park. On Arrival Suffolk Parks Rangers and SCPD Marine Bureau officers were at the scene and had a deer in distress on the ice on the bay side . It appeared the ice had cracked, and the deer was hanging on to part of it to keep itself up.
2 Rescue Swimmers were deployed in cold water rescue gear. After securing the Deer on the ice rescue sled the rescue swimmer and deer were pulled back to shore by Firefighters and Police who were on shore manning the ropes.
The deer was taken to shore and wrapped into blankets to try to warm it. Despite the water temps being below freezing it appeared alive. A wildlife rescue was notified. No further details on the deer’s status were available.
