3rd Alarm - 204/208-210 Wheeler Ave Bridgeport, CT - 4/9/2023
On Easter Sunday, April 9, 2023, around 4:15 pm, the Bridgeport ECC began receiving calls reporting a structure fire in the 200 block of Wheeler Ave. This "Adam-7" assignment consisted of Engine 1, Engine 4, Engine 12, Engine 3 as RIT, Ladder 5, Ladder 10, Rescue 5, Safety Officer 1, Battalion 1, and Battalion 2. Units reported a visible column of smoke as they were leaving quarters. Battalion 1, under the command of Prob. Assistant Chief Giovanni Sanzo, arrived on scene and reported a 2-1/2 story wood frame home and a 4-story apartment building both on fire, and transmitted a 2nd Alarm of Fire. Engine 10, Engine 16, and Ladder 6 were dispatched on the 2nd Alarm. As companies were stretching lines, Bridgeport received reports from residents on Charles Street that there were occupants trapped in the rear of 204 Wheeler. Companies immediately affected rescues and were able to remove several of the trapped occupants. Ladder 5 also made a rescue via their bucket. Companies worked to make progress interior but encountered a heavy load of smoke and fire. Assistant Chief Jeff Cronin soon ordered a 3rd Alarm of Fire to be transmitted. Engine 6, Engine 15, and Ladder 11 responded on the 3rd Alarm. Companies fought a stubborn fire in both buildings, going defensive at least once during the fire. Companies were able to knock down the fire in the apartment building after approximately 1 hour followed by the exposure building about 20 minutes later. Car 1, Car 2, Admin-1, FM-4, FM-10, and the Command Vehicle also responded to this fire. 15 families were displaced by this fire, The American Red Cross is assisting them. The Bridgeport Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of this fire.
