Level 1 Hazmat - 57 Ward St. Norwalk, CT - 4/13/2022
On Wednesday, April 13, 2022, around 1:10 pm, Norwalk Engine 1 responded to the 1 block of Ward St for a reported mercury spill in a parking lot, Truck 2 was also soon added. Upon arrival and investigation, it was confirmed that the fluid in the parking lot was Mercury and a large amount had spilled. A hazmat incident was declared. The Fairfield County Hazardous Incident Response Team was notified and responded to the scene. Firefighters soon learned that a large amount of Mercury had spilled in and from a van in the parking lot and that the night before, a man had taken items out of the van and up to his apartment. The man refused to exit his apartment for several hours. During this time, the situation was upgraded to a full team response for Fairfield County Hazmat. When the subject finally exited his apartment, Hazmat techs metered the subject and his apartment, finding both to be very contaminated. The subject was transported to the hospital after all contaminated items on his person were dealt with. Crews finally began cleanup and the process of re-occupying apartments. Hazmat technicians from around the state have also evaluated several other sites connected to this incident. There were no additional injuries. Norwalk PD and CT DEEP are investigating this incident.
