Around 7:30 pm, calls poured into emergency call centers all around the Lower Naugatuck Valley and beyond reporting a very large column of smoke. The source of the smoke was the former Star Pin Company mill building at 273 Canal St. Crews worked well into the night battling a very stubborn and wind-driven fire. Multiple parts of the building collapsed. Companies from across the valley responded to the scene and to cover stations.
