Tractor Trailer Fire - Myrtle Ave Bridgeport, CT - 2/25/2023
What started as a motor vehicle accident on I-95 in the early morning of February 25, 2023, would turn into a 12-hour incident for the Bridgeport Fire Department. Around 4:30 in the morning on February 25, 2023, the Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident with fire on I-95 North between Exits 26 and 27, arriving units found a tractor-trailer and a large camper van fully involved in fire. The camper was quickly extinguished, whereas the tractor-trailer proved troublesome, with its fully-packed load of plastic bottle caps. Firefighters continued into the morning battling the fire in the trailer, darkening it down enough to be able to safely move it off the highway. The trailer was able to be moved off the highway near noon. For the remainder of the afternoon until nearly 5, firefighters continued to extinguish remaining pockets of fire and cool down the load as it was removed from the truck and put into dumpsters. In total, the incident lasted over 12 hours. The Connecticut State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit is investigating the cause of the accident. I do not have any word on injuries, but the occupants of both vehicles were able to get out in time.
